Symbols in Chapter 2

In chapter 2 Eckleburg is a doctor on a billboard in the Valley of Ashes. "The eyes of Doctor T.J Eckleburg are blue and gigantic- their retinas are one yard high." His eyes symbolize the eyes of God overlooking the valley, and I believe overlooking the actions of the characters in the book. The mans eyes are covered by yellow glasses which could symbolize how the characters sight of what is wrong and right is distorted. In the book, cars turn out to be a symbol of recklessness, and carelessness. The light, as I mentioned in my last post is a symbol of hope. Gatsby often reaches to the light at the end of Daisy's dock in hope that he will end up happy with Daisy. A clock, is a symbol of time. Later in the book, we read about Gatsby's efforts to go back in time.

At first, I had no idea what the point of Dr. Eckleburg's eyes were. But I really see how they represent God. I also like what you said about how his glasses symbolize how the characters' are distorted.

I think it's a really cool theory that the glasses over the eyes could symbolize distortion. I also really like the symbolism of the car; it makes perfect sense.

i agree with Juliana, and at first did not understand the meaning behind Eckleburgs eyes, but now it makes sense

When I read chapter 2, I completely looked over the eyes and didn't pay any attention to them. I like how you said they symbolize God! It makes perfect sense.

Its great that the eyes can symbolize the watching of God over the characters and I also agree with the car symbolizing recklessness.

As Krista did, I totally did not pay any attention to the eyes. Also, I agree with the car idea representing racklessness.

Ladies and gentlemen, please remember that your responses should be thoughtful connections/ideas about the literature. You should not merely be commenting on nothing. Your responses do NOT have to be long, but they should not just be repeating that you too read the chapter.

Food for thought: if the glasses do indeed symbolize God, what does it say about Him that He is watching over the depression and despair of the Valley of Ashes and is not doing anything to change the lives of the people there?
