Chapter 4 minor characters

Owl Eyes is a man Nick and Jordan meet at Gatsby's party. He is drunk and later in chapter 4 crashes a car. I don't know what the symbolism of Owl Eyes is yet, but I think we will find out later in the book. Meyer Wolfsheim is a bootlegger in association with Gatsby. He wears a suit with cuff links made of human molars. I think this is to symbolize that those who are sophisticated may also be barbaric.

I think that Owl Eyes symbolizes wisdom. Also, I really like your explanation of Meyer Wolfsheim.

I also think that owl eyes could in fact represent wisdom

I really like your correlation between sophistication and being barbaric. Also, owls are often regarded as being a symbol of wisdom.

I think that there could still be more to discuss on this topic. For instance, where is it that the reader (and Nick) first meet Owl Eyes? What situations doe we see him involved in? What does it saya about Gatsby who might be involved with a man like Wolfsheim? If Gatsby was in fact in cahoots with Wolfsheim, will he ever truly be accepted by the East Eggers. Remember, this a forum for questions and analysis and examination - not merely a regurgitation of fact from the novel...

I think Owl eyes also may represent wisdom but him crashing a car and becoming drunk is not that wise of a thing to do

Were bootleggers and gamblers the same thing? I like how you described Wolfshiem as barbaric yet sophisticated.

Owl Eyes definitely symbolizes wisdom. Also, I think the term "owl eyes" could even have a further meaning that relates to Gatsby
