Chapter 4 minor characters

Owl Eyes is a man Nick and Jordan meet at Gatsby's party. He is drunk and later in chapter 4 crashes a car. I don't know what the symbolism of Owl Eyes is yet, but I think we will find out later in the book. Meyer Wolfsheim is a bootlegger in association with Gatsby. He wears a suit with cuff links made of human molars. I think this is to symbolize that those who are sophisticated may also be barbaric.

Symbols in Chapter 2

In chapter 2 Eckleburg is a doctor on a billboard in the Valley of Ashes. "The eyes of Doctor T.J Eckleburg are blue and gigantic- their retinas are one yard high." His eyes symbolize the eyes of God overlooking the valley, and I believe overlooking the actions of the characters in the book. The mans eyes are covered by yellow glasses which could symbolize how the characters sight of what is wrong and right is distorted. In the book, cars turn out to be a symbol of recklessness, and carelessness. The light, as I mentioned in my last post is a symbol of hope. Gatsby often reaches to the light at the end of Daisy's dock in hope that he will end up happy with Daisy. A clock, is a symbol of time. Later in the book, we read about Gatsby's efforts to go back in time.

Colors in Chapter 1

In chapter 1 the color green is used to describe a light on the dock outside of Daisy and Tom's house. Green is a color used to symbolize many feelings and ideas including luck, envy, wealth, new life, and hope. In the book the green light that Gatsby reaches out to symbolizes his hopes and dreams for the future. The light makes him think of Daisy and his goal of being with her. Gatsby's goal can also be representative of the goal to reach the American Dream. White symbolizes purity, innocence, and peace. I believe that Fitzgerald introduces characters that he wants to make a good impression on readers, in white clothing. For example Daisy, and Jordan's dresses in the first chapter. In the book, yellow represents moral corruption and decay. The color yellow is used to describe Gatsby's parties that appeal to the wealthy and immoral.

Gatsby so far

I really enjoy the book so far. Daisy and Nick are very likable charcters and im so excited to learn more about Gatsby. Im also noticing how interesting the 1920's were while reading. I can't wait to read the next chapter!
